TMT bar weight per metre = d² / 162, where d is the diameter in mm. A 12 mm bar weighs 0.889 kg per metre and 10.67 kg per 12 m length. Use the calculator to convert bars to kilograms or tonnes to bar count before you order steel.

How to order TMT steel without waste

  1. Take the bar bending schedule from your structural drawing. It lists each diameter and the total running metres.
  2. Convert metres to kilograms with the chart above, then add 3 to 5% for cutting and lap waste.
  3. Order in full 12 m bars by weight. Shorter lengths leave more offcuts.
  4. Stage deliveries by element: footings and columns first, then beams and slab, so steel does not sit on site and rust.

Common Questions

A 12 mm TMT bar weighs 0.889 kg per metre, so a standard 12 m bar weighs about 10.67 kg. One tonne contains about 94 bars of 12 mm x 12 m.
Weight in kg per metre = d² / 162, where d is the bar diameter in millimetres. For example, 16 mm: 16 x 16 / 162 = 1.58 kg per metre.
An 8 mm bar weighs 0.395 kg per metre, or 4.74 kg per 12 m bar, so one tonne has about 211 bars. In practice, bundles are sold by weight, so the count varies slightly.
IS 1786 allows a rolling tolerance of about plus or minus 7% for 8 and 10 mm bars and plus or minus 5% for 12 mm and above. Branded TMT from JSW or Tata Steel stays close to nominal; we bill by actual weighed quantity.
